The original intention for this event was to get together couples who were married in St Stephen's and to celebrate this in a special way with a service of re-affirmation. The timescale for necessary preparation proved too short for the service to be arranged for 12 February. Instead, we arranged an alternative event on Saturday 11 February in church - a comprehensive display of photographs spanning a long period was mounted. Pride of place went to the album belonging to Elsie and Jack Booth (married 23 April 1949 - we hope St George was represented!) and to the pictures brought by Margaret Godfrey (married 2nd December 1961). The two daughters of Jean and Ray Pearson who were married here also featured - Karen on 28th April 1979 , and the wedding of their younger daughter, Suzanne, being in the final week of service by the late Rev John Corradine (9th September 1996), although he didn't officiate. The service was licensed to a 'family vicar', Rev. Stephen Edwards, who is brother-in-law of Jean.
More recent events displayed were those of Darren and Tracey - daughter of Bernice Clark (married 16th April 2004) - and from July 2005, during the 'end of term' for Rev Andy Greenhough, we saw two pictures from the wedding of active church members Alison and John Boulton. Other displays of continuing aspects of church work included the following:
Jill Newsom and Freda Lees showed the work-in-progress on the latest banner which they are producing, with a harvest theme. This is using some base material from an earlier banner which used some things, such as trellis, which weren't an ideal companion to the woven work which is their
speciality. Dee Lambert and Cath Milnes produced eye-catching displays of the work of the various groups which cater for junior church members, incorporating the Valentines symbols. Mission partner commitments were represented (albeit without any Valentines hearts), with information about Christian Aid, the Children's Society, Samaritans (Christmas Child), Serving In Mission (SIM) - under which umbrella the Gibson family dedicate their lives in Burkina Faso - and the tremendous effort in Romania by Christian Communities International (CCM).
Refreshments were catered by Mo and her band of helpers. One village resident who called in to see what was happening said that he had visited most of the cathedrals in European capital cities. Although our roof can't quite match the splendour of our namesake in Vienna - St Stephan's Dom (at least 300 years older) - I suspect that, on a per capita basis of the respective populations, we may come out on top of a relative size comparison.
